Pledge of Allegiance – 1949

Tell me again about that myth of a Christian nation.

The movie is The Red Pony(1949), and the teacher is Margaret Hamilton, “The Wicked Witch of the West”.

Polar Ice Sheet, 1979 to present.

Sea ice is frozen seawater floating on the surface of the ocean. Some sea ice is semi-permanent, persisting from year to year, and some is seasonal, melting and refreezing from season to season. The sea ice cover reaches its minimum extent at the end of each summer and the remaining ice is called the perennial ice cover. The 2007 Arctic summer sea ice has reached the lowest extent of perennial ice cover on record – nearly 25% less than the previous low set in 2005. The area of the perennial ice has been steadily decreasing since the satellite record began in 1979, at a rate of about 10% per decade. But the 2007 minimum, reached on September 14, is far below the previous record made in 2005 and is about 38% lower than the climatological average. Such a dramatic loss has implications for ecology, climate and industry.”

Bear with this, it really does go somewhere. Patience is a virtue.

Open your eyes, what better reward is there than truth?

Stand Down.

September 10th, 2007

Just read over on the Military Times forums that the entire Air Combat Command is to stand down on September 14th in order to review safety procedures in the wake of the recent incident involving 6 armed nuclear warheads that were flown cross-country while mounted to the wings of a B-52 bomber.

Anyone with an interest in deep politics or a working knowledge of nuclear safety protocols know that this is almost impossible to have happen by accident, given the large scale, redundancy and strict rules followed when handing nuclear material or weapons.

The last time the North American Air Defense stood down was on 9/11, and we all know what happened then.

It’s all about The Golden Crescent.

Afghanistan expects record poppy harvest. Afghanistan will produce another record poppy harvest this year that cements its status as the world’s near-sole supplier of the heroin source, yet a furious debate over how to reverse the trend is stalling proposals to cut the crop, U.S. officials say.

Today is America’s wiretap the Internet day

Today, Monday May 14, is the day that all US network operators are required by US law to install back-doors to make it easier for cops to snoop on their traffic. This has been the law for voice switches for over a decade, where it represents a potential holiday for dirty cops who don’t have warrants use these back-doors (and criminals and corporate espionageists who want to eavesdrop on sensitive calls). Now it’s part of our data infrastructure as well. Nice one, America.

May 14th is the official deadline for cable modem companies, DSL providers, broadband over powerline, satellite internet companies and some universities to finish wiring up their networks with FBI-friendly surveillance gear, to comply with the FCC’s expanded interpretation of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act.

Congress passed CALEA in 1994 to help FBI eavesdroppers deal with digital telecom technology. The law required phone companies to make their networks easier to wiretap. The results: on mobile phone networks, where CALEA tech has 100% penetration, it’s credited with boosting the number of court-approved wiretaps a carrier can handle simultaneously, and greatly shortening the time it takes to get a wiretap going. Cops can now start listening in less than a day.

SPIN

Artist Brian Springer spent a year scouring the airwaves with a satellite dish grabbing back channel news feeds not intended for public consumption. The result of his research is SPIN, one of the most insightful films ever made about the mechanics of how television is used as a tool of social control to distort and limit the American public’s perception of reality.

Take the time to watch it from beginning to end and you’ll never look at TV reporting the same again. Tell your friends about it. This extraordinary film released in the early 1990s is almost completely unknown. Hopefully, the Internet will change that.

Yesterday, at a pre-trial hearing ahead of the trial of one of the accused, Sgt Dela Cruz gave evidence at a courtroom in Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego, California.

He said he watched how his squad leader, Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, shot five Iraqis who were trying to surrender and then told his men to lie about the killings.

“They were just standing, looking around, had hands up,” Sgt Dela Cruz said. “Then I saw one of them drop in the middle. I didn’t know what was going on, sir. Looked to my left, saw Staff Sergeant Wuterich shooting.”

The Iraqi civilians had been standing by a white car with their hands interlocked behind their heads when they were shot, Sgt Dela Cruz says.

“He told me that if anybody asked, they were running away and the Iraqi army shot them,” Sgt Dela Cruz said.

The very things that bring us life are disappearing one by one. In 50 years ocean water will be too acidic for calcium carbonate to grow, which means anything with a shell is gone. Coral reefs are gone. Crabs, shrimp, snails, lobster, all of it. Dissolved in a primordial soup of our own creation.

Constitutional law professor is on the Terror Watch List for criticizing Bush, marching for peace.

“When I tried to use the curb-side check in at the Sunport, I was denied a boarding pass because I was on the Terrorist Watch list. I was instructed to go inside and talk to a clerk. At this point, I should note that I am not only the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence (emeritus) but also a retired Marine colonel. I fought in the Korean War as a young lieutenant, was wounded, and decorated for heroism. I remained a professional soldier for more than five years and then accepted a commission as a reserve office, serving for an additional 19 years.”

“I presented my credentials from the Marine Corps to a very polite clerk for American Airlines. One of the two people to whom I talked asked a question and offered a frightening comment: ‘Have you been in any peace marches? We ban a lot of people from flying because of that.’ I explained that I had not so marched but had, in September, 2006, given a lecture at Princeton, televised and put on the Web, highly critical of George Bush for his many violations of the Constitution. ‘That’ll do it,’ the man said.”

Halliburton Chief’s Move to Dubai Evokes Warnings on Hill
(Sen. Dorgan to seek hearings on move)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20…
By Steven Mufson and Dana Hedgpeth

“The CEO of Halliburton has decided to leave this country to move his offices to Dubai because he says it is ‘a great business center.’ That is a bizarre announcement,” said Sen. Byron L. Dorgan (D-N.D.), who is a member of the Senate Commerce Committee.

Dorgan, who said he would seek hearings on the move, added: “I want to know, is Halliburton trying to run away from bad publicity on their contracts? Are they trying to run away from the obligation to pay U.S. taxes? Or are they trying to set up a corporate presence in Dubai so that they can avoid the restrictions that currently exist on doing business with prohibited countries like Iran?”
